Last.fm Presents the first in a new series of live music events based in New York City that will showcase rising talent from across the genre spectrum at the end of every month. On February 24th, experience the hypnotic psychedelica of Amen Dunes, the golden brown melodies of Quilt, and Friend Roulette‘s labyrinthine arrangements at Dominion NY (an intimate new space on Lafayette St). Get there early for a special listening party of Mike Wexler‘s debut album, ‘Dispossession‘ – a harrowing epic that channels late 60s British folk through a dystopian kaleidoscope of daydreams and deep emotions.

The musician behind Penguin Prison is New York City’s own Chris Glover. Out now is the self-titled album on Downtown Records. Click-thru and listen to Chris talk about the album and primarily about the song that’s got people talking. He also takes us through the making of the video for “Don’t F@#k With My Money”. His three-song performance is also included.Chris Plays & Chats

Today we’ve got Chris Glover doing “A Funny Thing”. This tune shows yet another side of the artist – and man who we believe is equally compelling on uptempo, dance-able numbers as he is sitting alone in a room with an acoustic guitar. Glover has purposely arranged the Penguin Prison project to allow for excellence at both ends of the spectrum, with lyrics and themes that are deep enough to survive the scrutiny of multiple listens. No Reason To Laugh

One of the most compelling tracks on the self-titled album by Penguin Prison is also one of Glover’s oldest compositions. “Golden Train” is rife with Glover’s on-point commentary about the state of the world, and the disconnect between the powers-that-be and “the rest of us.”Watch The Acoustic Version

Chris Glover, the man behind the music project Penguin Prison, stopped by our studio for a Street Date and Last.fm Presents session. Later in the week in our interview, the native New Yorker will explain how one of the most promising new acts in music came together. This was a case of a good song idea growing into a full-blown concept for a band. Glover didn’t set out to start Penguin Prison, but in the magical way that things happen when a good idea is born, his exciting solo compositions quickly grew into something that cried out for the support of a full live band. Check out the first of three songs that Chris did acoustically, the song behind the Occupy Wall Street-themed video.Chris Gets His Message Across
