ms Mumford & Sons Wind Down A Great Year, And Its Only Going To Get Better!

What a stunning and successful 2010 for Mumford & Sons, who pretty much started off their invasion of the U.S. with a Last.fm Discover session on February 17th, the day after the debut album Sigh No More was released in the U.S. They also made their stateside television debut that night on The Late Show With David Letterman. This past Monday and Tuesday, the London band closed out a great year and a tour with two sold-out, over-packed Terminal 5 shows in NYC.

Mumford & Sons pretty much owned Terminal 5 the night I went, Monday. Tuesday night was no different. They wrapped up a constant, almost two-year touring schedule for their debut album, which was first released in the U.K. on October of 2009. Previous stops here in the city have included shows at The Mercury Lounge and Webster Hall. What I remember vividly about the Webster Hall show was the ecstatic crowd bouncing up and down and singing the words to just about every song. On this night at the much larger Terminal 5, it was so packed that it prevented that free-moving freedom. That is until the final encore song “The Cave.” The place went nuts, the way I saw throughout the entire Webster show. There’s no doubt in my mind, based on that reaction and how great of a song “The Cave” is, it could be one of those nice left-field Top 40 hits in 2011. The momentum is there. Sales of the album is closing in on 400,000.

Another great quality this band has is the fans. They hold on to every word Marcus sings. Whether it’s one of the slower songs or the last few lines of “Little Lion Man,” in-between each word it was so quiet at Terminal 5, I swear you could’ve heard a pin drop. OK, maybe an exaggeration…how about a few bounces of a basketball? The encore looked like a scene out of The Rolling Stones’ Rock And Roll Circus with members of support bands Cadillac Sky and King Charles joining them on stage for a few songs, prior to closing with “The Cave.”

What’s up for the band as they prepare what just might be a busier and bigger year in 2011? Keyboardist Ben Lovett said it best from the stage, “We’re going home to do some laundry, get some sleep and maybe make a new album.” Take a look once again to the performance and interview that Mumford & Sons did at Last.fm Discover back in February.
