Last.fm Presents: Red Wanting Blue

Until about two years ago when they signed with Fanatic, the Ohio band Red Wanting Blue have been doing it the “DIY route” since 1995. While many bands might have given up along the way, the passion of each band member has kept their drive in full-gear. Their new album From The Vanishing Point was released this past January and like the previous one, was produced by Jamie Candiloro. Check out the guys in our studio for an exclusive four-song performance and interview.

From the last album These Magnificent Miles, it almost didn’t make it on. When producer Jamie Candiloro saw the band live and witnessed the fan reaction to the as-of-yet unrecorded song, he urged that it hould be recorded. It’s still in every live set.

Last.fm Presents: Risa Binder

Risa Binder has just released her debut album Paper Heart this week, and recently took the time to stop by with her band for a performance and interview. The Columbia, MD native, who moved to Brooklyn, NY around eight years ago, started writing songs about the things going on in her life at the age of nine. She grew up a pop music fan, but totally fell in love with country music while attending college. She was going to appear in a show about women in country music, and while doing research on Loretta Lynn, discovered how incredible she was.

When Risa decided to pack up and head to New York City, her attitude was to “write songs and see where it will take her.” With the release of her debut album, her ride is beginning. Paper Heart was produced by Marshall Altman at Smoakstack Studios in Nashville, TN. Being a fan of artists like Jason Mraz, James Taylor, Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum and Matt Nathanson, that gives you a dead-on hint where her album will bring you. Risa’s band includes: Ryan Bull – guitar, Lee Nadel – bass, Chris Lopresto – keyboards, Doug Yowell – drums and background vocalists Nadia Ackerman and Anthea White. Enjoy the performance below….

Last.fm Presents Live Session And Interview With Honeyhoney

Suzanne Santo and Ben Jaffe, who head-up Honeyhoney, stopped by the Last.fm Presents studio with their band recently, while they were in New York City for a show at The Mercury Lounge. They performed a few tunes off the new album, which gives us a little twang, a little Americana and a little good old rootsy country music.

Watch them do their current single “Turn That Finger Around,” a song written in Suzanne’s backyard around a riff that Ben was working on. The rest of the performance is also here, as well as our sit-down chat with Suzanne and Ben.

Last.fm Presents Interview And Live Session With The Drums

The Drums returned to our studio, a little over a year since their initial session with Last.fm Presents. This time around the quirky indie-pop band has a new album to spotlight, Portamento.

Since that last session, however, there have been some changes in their camp. First off, guitarist Adam Kessler left the band just a few days after we first met them. New faces in the band include Myles Matheny (bass/guitar/backing vocals) and a familiar face to me, Danny Lee Allen (drums) who was behind the kit with We Are Scientists when they came by in July of last year.

Last.fm Presents Session And Interview With Washington

This week’s featured artist Megan Washington, goes by the stage name of simply, Washington.

She was born in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea and lived there until the age of 11. Her family moved to Brisbane, Australia were she did her schooling, and currently lives in Melbourne. Her debut album I Believe You Liar got it’s U.S. release this past November. The song “How To Tame Lions” has already garnered some high praise in Australia. In December 2009 she won the inaugural Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition for the song. Last year at the ARIA Music Awards it was nominated for Single Of The Year. At the awards she won two awards, being named Best Female Artist & Breakthrough Artist. The album was nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Adult Alternative Album.
