Lastfm_Scott_H_Biram_385x240

Just the fact alone that Scott H. Biram was sitting in our studio recording a Discover session, is amazing in itself. Back on March 25, 2003, Scott was hit head on by an 18-wheeler truck and driven right over. He suffered a broken femur, knee, arm and several internal injuries. Metal pins & rods were put in all of the broken bones, and on top of that, a foot and a half of his intestines were removed.

Even more amazing is that only a handful of weeks after this life-threatening wreck, he was back on the stage performing in a wheelchair with an IV attached to his arm. He spent the next seven months in and out of the hospital. (Strangely enough, two original songs that he released on the record LO:FI Mojo, were called “Truck Driver” and “Wreck My Car”).The Dirty Old One Man Band

Lastfm_The_Dear_Hunter_385x240

The Dear Hunter is the project of Casey Crescenzo, who previously was rocking around in the band The Receiving End Of Sirens.

Ever since 2006, Casey has been releasing a series of albums, which currently consists of Act I, Act II and Act III. Casey decided to take a break from “The Acts” to do something less ambitious. However, he wound up doing something overly ambitious. That became a series of 9 EPs, each represented by a certain color (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet with Black & White added as well). The Color Spectrum release is currently available in two formats. The complete collection is available in an impressive vinyl box set and as a digital download. The standard version culls 11 tracks from the EPs, one from each of the nine EPs and one addtional from the Green and White EPs.

You can watch the “unboxing” of the “The Color Spectrum: Complete Collection” in this post. Now, we can give you the news of the CD box set of the full Color Spectrum collection. It’ll be released on November 1, and you can pre-order it now right here. He’s Like A Rainbow

Lastfm_Pop_Evil_385x240

From the west side of Michigan we bring you this week’s featured artist, Pop Evil.

Following a delay in the release of their latest album War Of Angels back in February, they parted ways with their former label. The weight of this delay was finally off of their shoulders when it was released in June on eOne Music.

The second single off the album, “Monster You Made,” is currently inside the Top 10 at active rock radio. Written quite a while ago by lead singer Leigh Kakaty, he brought it to the band near the end of working on the latest album, and everyone fell in love with it.

Check out the hard-rockers in this ultra-cool stripped down version of their current hit, three other songs and interview.Pop Evil Lurks Within

The electronic Canadian duo of Ajay Bhattacharyya (instruments/producer) and Amy Kirkpatrick (vocals / lyrics), although friends since high school, it wasn’t until two years ago that they teamed up together musically. The two 25 year-olds that make up Data Romance first struck with a movie soundtrack in January of this year, followed by a 4-song EP in June. In the new year look for a new EP called Ashes.  The plan for an album is to, according to Ajay, ”do it when it feels right.” That full-length should also appear in 2012. Check out four songs done in our studio, including three which have yet to be released anywhere!Click To Go Forwards

Lastfm_BenLee_385x240

Ben Lee returns with a new album on October 11th, his first for Dangerbird Records, called Deeper Into Dream. While he was in NYC recently to play live and to have a little holiday time, the “smart-man’s” pop-rocker stopped off to play three songs from this forthcoming release. The album which unfolds like a dream, was worked on in his home studio, which Ben started working on about a year ago. Playing these songs in this type of setting for the first time, enjoy these new songs, acoustically, exclusively, right here. Watch “Pointless Beauty, which on the album, is the first song Ben ever plays drums on, on a record. The title of the song, was inspired after he saw Rufus Wainwright play a show at The Greek Theatre in L.A. on the last tour. Ben says, “He’s so graceful and his taste is so excellent in everything. I want that, I want pointless beauty in my life!” You can also take in two more brand new songs and Ben’s chat with us.Check Out Ben’s Musical Beauty

Lastfm_Static_Jacks_385x240

The Static Jacks, with their roots based in Westfield and Roselle Park, NJ stopped off at Last.fm Discover a few weeks before the release of their debut full-length album If You’re Young.

Recorded at Stratosphere Sound Recording Studios in NYC (which is owned by Adam Scheslinger, James Iha and Andy Chase), Chris Shaw handled the production job. The pop-rockers gave us a full-band performance as well as a sit-down chat. Watch the featured song that started as an instrumental demo from guitarist Henry Kaye that he hated. He passed it to the other guys and after going through a few different phases, “Into The Sun” was born. The rest of their performance and interview is also included.New Jersey Rocks!

Lastfm_An_horse_385x240

Australian duo An Horse, made up of guitarist / lead vocalist / songwriter Kate Cooper and drummer / vocalist Damon Cox stopped by our studio for the latest Discover session. They were in the city to also shoot a video for “Not Mine,” a track from their new album Walls. They met up while working at Skinny’s, a record shop in Brisbane, Australia. The two of them would talk about music constantly and it got to the point where their boss split them up for a few months. As Kate and Damon put it, they felt like a naughty students. About a year after working together, they started rehearsing together in the store, after-hours, using the in-store PA. Find out more about this indie-rock duo by checking out our interview with them, and see them perform four songs. An Horse An Session

Viva1

On their way north, following a gig in Philly, it was up the New Jersey Turnpike for Viva Brother. Before a gig in Boston later that night, we were privileged to have the band to spend a few quality hours in our studio. Just a few months prior, the Slough, UK band made their U.S. debut at SXSW, and played their first New Jersey (Maxwell’s) and New York City (Mercury Lounge) shows. Perhaps you saw them and didn’t know this is the same band? You see, here in the U.S., the band have had to change their name from Brother, to Brother U.K. before settling on Viva Brother. Their debut album Famous First Words was released on August 2nd and was preceeded here in the states by the Fly By Nights EP.It Is What It Is

U.S.2

This week’s featured band spent a handful of weeks near or at the top of the Last.fm Hyped Artist chart in late January and early February. The Washington D.C. based pop/rock band U.S. Royalty, behind their debut album Mirrors, came to the Last.fm Discover studio to featured some of these tracks.

The band started back in 2007 with brothers John & Paul Thornley who are joined by Luke Adams and Jacob Michael. Before releasing any music, they toured for a few years and rehearsed in an abandoned trailer in nearby Maryland. Prior to the debut album, they released the Midsommer EP back in ’09 on Engine Room Recordings label. Check out the very catchy “Monte Carlo” and the rest of their Discover session.Spend Time With Royalty

Lastfm_Seapony_385x240

Last.fm Discover welcomes Seapony, who stopped off at our studio to play tracks from their sparkling debut album Go With Me.

The band got their initial exposure after they posted four songs on Bandcamp in late ’10, and from it, they were contacted by the U.K. label Double Denim Records who released their debut 7″ single. After bouncing around the U.S. a little for the past few years, Danny, Jen and Ian settled in Seattle, WA where they met the latest member, their touring drummer John. A former DJ at the University Of Washington, John had the band on his radio show for a session. About a month after doing that, the drummerless band asked him if he knew any drummers, he said no. Then Danny asked him if he had rhythm, and soon enough John was in.
